On July 28, Senior Loan Officer Maria Foster will participate in a bike ride from Washington DC to Dewey Beach, Delaware to raise awareness and money for autism. A total of over 100 grueling miles on a hot summer day and Maria couldn’t be more excited.

“I signed up for the race back in April after hearing about it from a co-worker, and I’m excited to have my sons riding with me,” says Maria.

This “Bike to the Beach” is happening in cities across the country, and so far has raised over $3 Million dollars in support of autism, a cause that resonates with Maria. Her 12-year-old daughter Grace has special needs, and she understands the struggle these families face.

“I’m the kind of person who gets excited about doing something that serves multiple purposes,” says Foster. “I feel proud that I can participate in something that serves our community while spending time with my sons and teaching them about perseverance on the long ride, but most importantly it helps support people who have challenges.”

Their team is called “Just Keep Pedaling,” which seems appropriate considering Maria’s history on her bike. Twenty years ago, she rode over 3,000 miles from Los Angeles to Washington D.C., stopping to volunteer and help people along the way.

“We stayed in churches and with local families and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. We even rode through the Mohabi desert and spent a night there,” she recalls. “I even got bitten by a scorpion one night in the desert, but I still finished the trip!”

“I haven’t ridden much since that trip, so this race has been a great opportunity for me to get back out there,” she says.

The TowneBank “culture of caring” has long been at the forefront of how TowneBank Mortgage does business. We are proud to see our employees involved in giving back to the communities where they work and live.

“When I told my boss, Matt Benson, that I wanted to do this, I was surprised how quickly he said yes and was happy to sponsor me. I’ve seen how involved TowneBank Mortgage is as a company in our local community, and it’s one of the things I truly love about working for this company.”
